To Request Registration For One or More Classes for 2012-2013,
You Must Use The Online Registration Form Located on the Registration Page.

Parental Involvement: As with all home education classes, parents are the primary educators, administrators, and disciplinarians of their students. The HEED instructor is the tutor teaching the student in class, while the parent oversees and leads the student during the week. Parents will need to remain involved by: being aware of assignments, due dates, and student progress, as well as providing help for their individual student when needed. Keeping up on all assignments and handing in work on time is crucial for the success of the class and for the course to progress along throughout the year. Not all classes are offered every year.

High School Writing

HEED High School writing classes provide a unique opportunity for students to develop competency in several different areas of writing and communications. Presentations and peer critiques, which are requirements for both classes, serve to develop the student’s ability to give and take criticism in a non-threatening environment. Current, interesting topics combined with step-by-step, basic writing instruction will challenge the students' minds and develop their skills.

Course: Writing I - at the Logic Level:
Instructor: Mrs. LeeAnn Thomas (write.now.lat@gmail.com)
Cost: $160.00 + ($20.00 Materials Fee)

Fall Semester Only

(Grades 9th - 10th)

High School Credit = 1/2 Credit Writing

“Children who are free to play with words will fall in love with words; time, maturity, and life will help them balance creativity, eloquence, and conciseness.”

--A. Pudewa, Institute for Excellence in Writing

Students in Logic Level writing learn to apply tools for presenting ideas nin an organized and interesting manner. Essay construction will be emphasized, with some creative aspects "thrown-in" for good-measure! Enjoyable class activities give students the confidence and motivation to tackle homework with as little "pain" as possible. A review of basic essay format will be covered the first few weeks.

Creative - Expository - Descriptive, Persuasive and Comparative essays will sharpen the student's research, mechanics and creative writing skills. Editing, critiquing and public speaking skills will be challanged as well, by weekly presentations and peer critiques.

Since it has become more important than ever for students to be aware of the day to day challenges and events in our world, a portion of this class will include research, interpretations and presentations of current events.

Homework: All work to be proofed and edited before class. Students should expect approximately 2 hours of writing homework per week to prepare for this class. Students repeatedly missing assignments will be dropped from the class.

“It is okay, in fact good, for children to be bold with words - even to an extreme. We don't know what they will be called to do in life."

--A. Pudewa, Institute for Excellence in Writing

As home educators and Christians, we place a high value on thinking and reasoning as it relates to scriptural principals. By utilizing a Classical Rhetoric approach, students will learn more than the forms and functions of writing. In Rhetoric Level writing, students will be exposed to a number of upper level disciplines: analytical thinking, critical review, persuasive writing and simple debate.

Since it has become more important than ever for students to be aware of the day to day challenges and events in our world, a portion of this class will include research, interpretations and presentations of current events.

Homework: Students should expect approximately 2 hours of writing homework per week. (Note: Internet research will be required to prepare for this class). Students repeatedly missing assignments will be dropped from the class.

Cost: $230.00

High School Credit = 1 Credit for History

Ancient History comes alive in the classroom as we experience it though interactive activities, crafts, recipies, reader's theaters and maps. Learning ancient history from a Biblical perspective will be a faith-building experience as we answer such questions as, "What did the streets of Babylon look like when Daniel was a prisoner there?" What was going on in Asia when David wrote the Psalms? What would Moses have dressed like when he lived in Pharaoh's palace?" Stories that we learned in Sunday School as little children suddenly take on new meaning as we fit them into their proper place in world events so that we can view the bigger picture - God's Marvelous plan to bring redempton to his people through Jesus Christ. With short, daily readings that can be enjoyed individually or with the whole family, students will keep track of major events on their individual timelines. Friendly quarterly reviews will help us to recall the things we've learned. This course will include the list of books that coincide with the era being studied, to add an optional literature component for older students who choose to do so.

Middle School Science

Our general science program is a two year path of study designed for Middle School aged students (grades 7-8, - 6 graders are admitted if space provides).  In each year students will study the different disciplines of science (as they exist today) in the order of how they were introduced in the Creation week in Genesis 1. Both years of the program will be self-standing so a student need not enter at the beginning of the program to benefit. Each year of the program will start with a short overview of the Biblical Scientific Creation Model of Origins to make sure students understand how science and natural history fit into their Bible. This model will be referred to regularly throughout the program.

Course: General Science - Year 1 “The Lord God Made Them All" / All Things Bright and Beautiful
Instructor: Mrs. Catie Frates (catiefrates@embarqmail.com)

Middle School Writing

Course: Writing / Language Arts II
Instructor: Mrs. Aimee Line:(aimeeline@gmail.com)
Cost: $230.00 + ( $10.00 Materials Fee)

(Grades 7th - 8th)

Language Arts Workshop integrates writing, literature, grammar, and presentation into a lively and meaningful experience.  The workshop format of teaching English has been recognized by both the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) as a highly motivating method for teaching students across the spectrum of learning styles and abilities.  Students are inspired to write when their projects have lasting value, and so workshop students publish their works in various formats.  The teacher is there to help them through each stage of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, and publishing) as their editor and encourager.  Because workshop students learn to edit and participate in whole-class editing conferences, they are able to see how grammar applies to writing.  Quality literature and examples of successful student writing are shared in class as a means of modeling writing types (expository, informative, descriptive, narrative, persuasive) and styles.

Through activities and contests, the seventh and eighth grade class will find interesting ways to combine sentences for variation and fluidity by using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.  They will explore the structural elements of essays including solid leads, over-all coherence, organization, effective transitions, and strong conclusions.  Elements of style to be covered will include showing vs. telling, developing rich imagery, strong verbs, quality adjectives, active vs. passive voice, cutting clutter, and figures of speech.  Their special project for the year will be the production of a quarterly class newspaper.  As students work through the process of publishing a newspaper, they will use or reinforce the following skills: narrative writing, creative writing, letter writing, writing opinions, writing directions, conducting and writing interviews, persuasive writing, and descriptive writing in many forms.  We will take occasional breaks to have fun with poetry, including sessions with Mrs. Line's “Poetry Chips” – a unique way of creating vivid imagery in poems.

Textbooks: No textbooks necessary.

Homework: Parental help needed. Students should expect approximately 30-40 minutes of writing homework per day to prepare for this class.
